Summary/Abstract: The paradigm of realism is based on a country-centered perception of international relations. Countries, pursuing their own interests, seek to increase their power, using a wide range of the means and methods. In order to achieve maximum effectiveness in the international arena, the states conduct foreign policy in a selfish way, that is typical for human behavior. States, like humans, strive for their security, development and glory, while their fundamental interests can be achieved through a variety of means. The Russian Federation is targeted at the integration of the post-Soviet area and strengthen its position in the international arena. The pro-European orientation of the new authorities in Ukraine, which belongs to a strategically important area for the Russian Federation directly influenced the imbalance in the implementation of the fundamental principles of the Russian foreign policy towards the post-Soviet area. The purpose of this article is to attempt to apply the assumptions of the realistic paradigm to the Russian Federation policies towards the area of the former Soviet Union, with particular emphasis on Ukraine.
