Summary/Abstract: Since the mid 19th c. the geopolitical belonging of the Ukrainian and Russian borderland and of the Crimean Peninsula has been the object of interest of the then powers. The article analyzes differences in how the Ukrainian political thought and geostrategic concepts of Ukraine’s close and far neighbors approach the problems of Crimea and land of today’s eastern Ukraine. The problem of Crimea’s territorial belonging is shown from the perspective of Ukrainian, German, English and Russian schools of geopolitics. Attention has also been drawn to the geopolitical consequences of the loss of Crimea for Ukraine and for the countries of Eastern Europe.
