Distinctive Features of Russian Political Discourse (Based on President Putin’s Inaugural Speech, 2012)

Summary/Abstract: The political discourse is a complex linguistic phenomenon which has no unequivocal perceptionin linguistic literature. The inaugural speech of president elect is one of the most important types ofthis discourse. The tradition of this genre was formed many years ago in the United States of America.It is a new genre in Russia, but it is becoming more and more important. Thanks to the intention ofspeech (unifi cation of the nation), its emotional saturation, the conformity of its content with citizens’expectations, the inaugural speech is an effective instrument of political activity.The material for the research was president Putin’s inaugural speech in 2012. The authoranalyzed the composition of speech, its themes and linguistic features. The research proved that theexamined speech complies with all functions of the genre and it also contains almost all elementstypical for it.
