Summary/Abstract: In the work on the example of the Skórzynka catchment located within the Poznan Metropolitan Area an attempt to determine the most profitable variant of protection against flood, drought and water shortage through the improvement of water retention capacity of the catchment using AHP method was made. In the analysis four (socioeconomic, retention, environmental, social) criteria indicating the conditions of achieving the most important objective were adopted, and three alternative solutions (small water retention reservoir, agrotechnical measures, storm water management systems). On the basis of conducted analyses it was shown that the best solution leading to the improvement of water retention capacity of the catchment are agrotechnical measures which should be treated as a priority in climate change adaptation programmes.
