Summary/Abstract: This article is an analysis of new forms and areas of participation in urban life in terms of their potential for the development of a city. Their value lies primarily in the socialization of public space, which is today both a prerequisite for the viability of the western city while also being a threatened resource. Different tendencies to open a city for residents are, at the same time, accompanied by phenomena that attempt to restrict this activity, or instrumentalise it, returning to the model of a city as a designed closed system. As a result, the overall balance of participation efforts are uncertain, and socialization itself is more of a project than a final decision; its realization requires public support at different levels. In Poland, above all, such effort require support that will address the current barriers responsible for common attitudes among ordinary residents, who rarely have the will to take on more commitments and to change the nature of their everyday life in a city.
