Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article was to present the effects of the implementation of EMAS system in Polish enterprises and to evaluate their significance in shaping competitiveness of enterprises. In the first part of the article, in order to present the essence of competitiveness and competitive advantage, the literature research was analyzed. Furthermore, the results of empirical research conducted by the author in 2015 among Polish enterprises registered under EMAS were presented. Based on the empirical research it can be concluded that EMAS is an instrument the implementation of which results in gaining positive effects in the areas that can be the basis of strengthening the competitiveness of enterprises. In particular, the importance of the implementation of EMAS System for improving the image and relations with stakeholders should be emphasized. Positive effects in selected aforementioned areas can become the basis for building a sustainable competitive advantage.
