Summary/Abstract: The turbulent changes in the economic environment and the financial crisis have made conditions for market activity more difficult for banks. Competition on the banking market is turning to hyper-competition – also known as virtual competition. As a result, a bank’s capacity for sustainable development and increased competitiveness is inseparably connected with the ability to respond flexibly to market changes and to make creative use of the resources and experience at its disposal. Organisational knowledge, which is accrued in a process of observation, experience and learning, makes it possible to draw conclusions from the experience gathered, to develop skills, to solve problems and to generate strategic competences. In this way the new challenges presented by the market and customers can be met. The paper presents the role of organizational knowledge in the process of building a bank’s competitiveness. The theoretical approach is enriched by field research, which includes the opinions of bank managers and customers.
