Summary/Abstract: Genre differentiation and definition of the folklore ballad comes to be one of the most complicated problems in folkloristics. The study tries to outline the logical and historical reasons of the problem. Due to its “overtuned” genesis the term Ballad (and the hiding in it genre status of the ballad) appears to be a genealogical curiosity, a logical trap which makes the problem of genre definition of folklore ballad songs practically unsolvable or only partly solvable. The work makes a critical survey of the main methodological routes for finding a way out from the delineated genealogical situation. A new definition is suggested as an obligatory of genre characteristics pointing at their interdependence and interdetermination, i.e. pointing at the inner logic of the genre, which is also an argument favouring the theoretical basis of its existence.
