Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to identify and explain potential sources of intra-industry trade (IIT) originating from country-specific characteristics, and to explore the nature of their impact on IIT variation between countries and between industries. A detailed analytical insight into common characteristics as well as country-specific characteristics as determinants of IIT provides sound theoretical groundwork for modeling IIT determination in empirical research. Although importance and positivity/negativity of the impact of individual determinants depends on characteristics of a specific research, it is possible to establish some „rules”, based on three decades long theoretical and empirical studies into IIT: in principle, IIT intensity is positively correlated with country size, economic development level, trade openness, trade intensity, adjacency, membership in regional integration, common language, whereas it is negatively correlated with differences in size and development, distance and other trade barriers.
