Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the sustainable development of transport in the European Union which bases on two foundations. The first is to influence the economic development through fair prices and efficient mobility of goods and people. The second is to impact on social development by reducing congestion and negative externalities of transport as pollution, noise, climate change and environmental damage. Statistical data confirm the reduction of pollution from transport, reduction of transport intensity of the European economy and the return of the European economy and transport demand (to a lesser extent) to growth path after the economic crisis erupted in 2008–2009.
