Economic development and Polish transportation systems

Summary/Abstract: With joining the European Union in 2004, Poland has become a major beneficiary of the structural funds dedicated for the alignment of economic disparities between the regions of the Community. Particularly large expenditures were earmarked for the development of underfunded transport infrastructure. The purpose of this article is to characterize the diversity of Polish regions on the basis of a synthetic indicator of transportation system development. The compounds between the development level of Polish NUTS 2 regions and their state of transportation infrastructure are analyzed with the correlation coefficient. The nature and strength of the correlation and the causes of different ways are discussed in respect of the period from 2004 to 2011.
