Summary/Abstract: The forests possessed a major role in the life of human communities throughout history. As soon as the Hungarian rule over Transylvania was set, the royalty issued a series of Benefaction Diplomas to accommodate certain subjects either for the purpose of rewarding them for their deeds of loyalty to the crown, or to endow various civil and military institutions with estate and land. The dwellers of the villages could no longer make use of the forests unless they were allowed to do so by the respective landowner and also in exchange for services of land tilling, or paying mandatory taxes, and fees; this led to an utter state of discontent. The Court in Vienna made efforts to soften the complaints and to preserve the forest fund by adopting a number of general regulations and orders. In order to establish a code of discipline in what concerned the exploitation of the forests, the management of the Zarand County adopted a timbering regulation. The regulation is composed of 16 paragraphs which set out the conditions for timbering across the forests of the county. It was adopted by the Assembly of the Zarand County on November 2nd 1863, and signed by the Supreme Head of the County, Ioan Pipoş.
