Summary/Abstract: The article discusses factors that affect translation of Croatian toponyms into Polish in utility (non‑artistic) translation. These include: a) normative documents, b) usus, c) historical variability of the tendency to use endonyms/exonyms. Guide books for Croatia published in Poland in the 1930s were subjected to analysis, followed by a comparison of the toponyms contained therein with the modern norm and the modern usus. The findings provided by the analysis may be useful in translator training.
