Summary/Abstract: Łódź is a city with high-scale social problems as well as those relating to the developed environment. The solution to them is large-scale urban renewal of the central part of the city. It encompasses, among others, the 30-hectare area located in the center of Łódź. The importance of this area for the functioning of the city is crucial due to its transitional character – between the New Centre of Łódź and the railway station (under construction at the moment) and Piotrkowska Street, which is a representative, retail and historical axis of the city. This article is aimed at assessing development prospects of this area of the city and outlining steps necessary for including this part of the city in a broader revitalization process of the downtown. Due to its location, which predestines the discussed area for transitional pedestrian traffic, the considerations presented in this article contribute to the broad problem of a pedestrian-friendly city.
