Summary/Abstract: The subject of the paper is to define the key factors influencing the current account surpluses and deficits in the euro area countries. The authors’ attention is focused on the determinants of competitive advantage and the reasons for declining trade competitiveness in catching-up countries, particularly Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Cyprus (GIPSIC).
