The structure of Polish trade balance in the context of the concept of economic security

Summary/Abstract: The paper embarks on the analysis of sectoral and geographical structure of Polish trade balance in the period 2001–2014. Conducted research was aimed at the identification of reasons generating deficit, mainly from the standpoint of technological intensity of Polish exports and imports. For the purpose of the research the data at the 2- and 4-digit disaggregation level of the Harmonised System were used, which then enabled to diagnose the level of technological advancement of trade streams. Obtained results justify the paradigm of middle income trap together with threats related. The role of Poland in the contemporary international division of labour was strongly determined by the nature of foreign direct investments sustaining cost and effeciency advantages and thus sustaining technological dependency of Polish economic system on the inflow of foreign capital.
