Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes Lijphart’s theory on patterns of democracy (consensus and majority), including his critiques, which are divided into four streams. The first focuses on theoretical assumptions and the design of models. The second one questions methodological issues and operationalization of indicators. The third concerns Lijphart’s empirical analysis and his findings. The fourth deals with his normative conclusions about consensus democracy. The authors also assess the research applicability of this theory and suggest some alternatives.
