Summary/Abstract: The success of higher education institutions depends on making efficient strategic choices. The concept of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) created for commercial entities is increasingly applied also in public universities. The effectiveness of the implementation of this solution depends on the ability to adjust it to the specific processes in such institutions, which concentrate their activities on research and teaching. This paper seeks to assess the strategies adopted in public universities in Poland from the point of view of the use of the BSC methodology in construction, implementation, and evaluation strategies. The survey was conducted on a sample of 13 universities. The results indicate that the strategies in the analysed universities are regarded more as a pressure resulting from formal requirements imposed by the regulations, rather than as a tool supporting management processes. The evaluation of the areas most commonly presented in the form of strategic objectives shows perspectives that could be included while creating BSC for this type of entities.
