Summary/Abstract: At the outset, the question needs answering: Why delve into this subject? Torres has lucidly explained that theories of democracy and multiculturalism attempt to clarify a sense of identity for a democratic citizen and a multicultural subject while also defining the possibilities and limits of forms of sociability that will promote the ability in individuals to tolerate and associate with people from different backgrounds. This paper will appraise this topic from a South African angle, where our emergence from an era of racial segregation has triggered new challenges. But before doing this, I would like to spell out the peculiar nuances and contexts in which the key terms of the title – namely, multiculturalism, democracy and education – have been utilized in my presentation.
