Summary/Abstract: The concept of social capital is difficult to define. This is due to the multiplicity andambiguity of the ideas that define this notion. The main issue is the lack of definition of what exactlysocial capital is, and there is only an indication of what it refers to. However, since nearly thirty years, the concept of social capital is increasingly appearing in the research, as a complement or extension tothe range of research in the social sciences, including economy. This article aims to classify classic approaches of the concept and its types proposed so far andto give an overview of the proposals of empirical research on social capital. This article is divided intofour points. The first point is devoted to the analysis of the origins and differences in defining the term"social capital". The second point deals with the classification of types of social capital, according tothe terminology used by the respective authors. The third point is the analysis of the term from theeconomic point of view. The fourth point is an attempt to collect methods of measuring social capital. The article closes with a summary of the collected data and an indication of further research proposalson social capital in economic view.
