Summary/Abstract: The article looks at the role of social media for the development of tourism in the conditions of rapid globalization and the growing importance of the unique tourist place. Defined are some basic concepts such as WEB 2.0, social media, blogs, podcasts, tagging, etc. The paper discusses the advantages of the active, informed and based on proper management strategy use of the new communication channels. Outlined are the negative aspects of the excessive attention paid to tourist information on the web. The article lists some of the popular social media for tourism and describes how they have influenced people seeking tourism services. Conclusions are made about the relationship between tourism and social media and there is an attempt to predict what may happen in the next few years.
