Summary/Abstract: Adam Smith, the founder of classical economics and well-known liberal thinker is often associated with the concept of a night watchman state. A careful analysis of Wealth of Nations leads to the conclusion that this term does not describe his views accurately. Apart from the defense and justice, the Scottish philosopher saw a number of other areas where the state should be active. According to the author of The Wealth of Nations, state intervention is necessary, inter alia, on issues such as the construction of roads and canals, protection of trade, banking and insurance, water supply, education and even health care.
