Summary/Abstract: I am not going to ask about artists’ attitudes toward violence. Nevertheless, I believe that certain artistic attitudes contribute to the spread of violence and destruction. Nietzsche wrote that “art was violent”. The futurists shared his opinion, and they added, that art was not only violent, but, also, it was unjust and cruel. They wanted to destroy civilisation. Marinetti and Tzara believed that their mission was to destroy what they considered old-fashioned and obsolete. They didn’t want to refer to any tradition. They wanted to demolish museums. Nero, a cruel Roman emperor, considered burning city as a great theatrical performance. He ignored the fact that people died in the fire. For himself, the human suffering was the source of pleasure. Stockhousen, contemporary German composer, had similar comments to the destruction of the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. He considered cruel terrorist attack as “work of art”.
