Philosophy of City – Philosophy of Design

Summary/Abstract: This is a draft on philosophy of city project. Described in frames of design philosophy, that is to see a city as a phenomenon, formated by design arts. However, approaching design arts I’m not going to suggest that the city might be completely projected or be an object of project realization. Considering a spontaneous character of the city-can we talk at all about a city design? Since the city isn’t even a sum of fragmentary projects, submitted by urban, landscape, architectural, product, fashion or graphic design. Philosophers, when discussing ideas connected i.e. with city designing, might manifest logical assumption and its concequences, whereas psychologists and sociologists may take up reception and circulation of ideas. What does “philosophy of city” mean? Does the term itself sound more seriously than “philosophy of house” or teaspoon only as the city is the city? Everyone accepts or adopts some philosophical ideas (onthological, anthropological, esthetical or etical). In that way some philosophy is immanent to people, their products and human existence. Instead, philosophy regarded as a kind of theory, accordingly can be conceived as a reflection on one or anothrsphere of human activity. A city, a house, a spoon. Even a spoon ist’t possible without some ideas; even a spoon, a fork, a knife have their immanent philosophy – R. Barthes in his “Imperium of Sings” made us realize the origin of the cutlery idea. No house is only the material fact, combination of stones, beams and bricks – it is always described throughout certain idea. The name is with the city. Every city brings certain ideas, in particular certain philosophy of a human being. This anthropological aspect of the city is especially important, when we talk about design. Design refers to human nature and the fundamental question is, how it sheres in humanity. Every project, realization just as the life shaped with them, manifest their sense, the way they fulfil that question.
