Serbian Impersonal Passive Predicate Forms and Their English Correspondents on the Case of Tranlation of the Novel Na Drini Ćuprija

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the results of a contrastive analysis of Serbian impersonal passive predicate forms and their English correspondents, which refers to defining translational patterns and structures within which these forms occur. A total of 27 examples of Serbian impersonal passive predicate forms were registered in the corpus, as well as the same number of structures representing their correspondents in the English translation. It was discovered that Serbian impersonal passive predicate forms were transferred into four types of translational correspondents, and the translation pattern presented by the formula ‘Odat + -no/-to + da > S + -en/-ed + to’ was identified as the most stable.The paper has also analyzed the diverse use of passive participles for verbs such as ‘suditi’ i ‘maštati’, with the conclusion that the interpretation and analysis of some verbal structures / forms should not be restricted to grammatical criteria only. Also, when defining the basic criteria for passive formation, more precise terminology related to verb transitivity should be used.
