Summary/Abstract: Several things catch one’s eye when discussing the work of Kaunas National Puppet Theater in the years 1970–1990. First, the repertoire, previously dominated by Russian dramaturgy, includes significantly more works of Lithuanian authors and pieces written by playwrights of other countries – Poland, Bulgaria and Estonia. Plays dealing with more mature and diverse matters raised higher requirements for directors and actors. The head of theater and senior director Stasys Ratkevičius is assisted by Algimantas Stankevičius and Laima Jankauskaitė; stenographers Vitalijus Mazūras, Jūratė Račinskaitė, and Jūratė Stauskaitė are invited to the theater. At times the theater tries to get rid of the boundaries of realistic imitation and enter a more poetical and metaphorical theatrical space. This is proven in some plays (including P. Manchev’s renewed “Zuikių mokykla” and “Eglė žalčių karalienė” by S. Nėris; A. Popesku’s “Spindulėlis”; Eugenijus Ignatavičius’ “Šyvio dalia”; “Stebuklingoji motina elnė” by C. Aitmatov) which received prizes at puppet theater festivals and were successfully performed in foreign countries.
