Summary/Abstract: The article is in the pursuit to give a certain context to the creative phenomenon of Vitalijus Mazūras. First of all, it is important to note that the environment in which Vitalijus Mazūras’, the famous puppeteers’ body of work started and bloomed – was the awakening time of the Lithuanian creative life. The author mentions the most prominent landmarks and phenomena that determined the directions of the artistic movement. The discussion revolves around theater which was conditioned by the visual arts and literature, dramaturgy and the young generation of directors. The awakening of the Drama Theatre is counted from the late 6th decade, but for the puppet theatre the ice started moving at the end of the 7th decade. The most prominent figure of the movement was Vitalijus Mazūras whose name is usually linked with the L ėlė theatre, even though he created a multitude of set designs for other Lithuanian puppet, drama and musical theatres. V. Mazūras is a representative of the “author’s theatre” who, in collaboration with the most prominent poets and composers of his time, created an entire stratum of Lithuanian theatre culture.
