Summary/Abstract: Innovative responses of enterprises in modern business conditions become a crucial prerequisite to achieve business success and to ensure long-term competitive advantage. Innovation as a key means of competitiveness and strategic positioning is particularly important for the survival, growth, and development of small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) considering the fact that they are exposed to many risks. In times of globalization, risks are more pronounced and the managements of these companies are required to search for new ways to compete. Combining their flexibility with the orientation to create superior value for customers, small and medium-sized enterprises can provide competitive advantage. This paper uses the existing theoretical views on the importance of creating innovative business models to explore the innovative capacity of SMEs in Serbia and to identify opportunities for its increase in order to improve business performance and integrate faster into the global economic trends.
