Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the relation between the Gospel and Canon Law. In the contemporary mentality, the Gospel and Canon Law are often perceived as opposing one another. Such reasoning arises from incomprehension of the nature of Canon Law. The author recalls the Address of Pope Francis to the officials of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota on the inauguration of the judicial year, in which the Pope stated: The juridical dimension and the pastoral dimension of the Church’s ministry do not stand in opposition, for they both contribute to realizing the Church’s purpose and unity of action, to emphasize that the Church also has a juridical dimension. Subsequently, the author discusses the anti-juridical current in the Church and the Gospel foundations of Canon Law. The Gospel is the source of Canon Law and hence they should not be opposed. In conclusion the author affirms that the purpose of both the Gospel and Canon Law is the salvation of man, as is stated in the can. 1753 of the Code of Canon Law. As a consequence of existence of juridical relations in the Community of the Church, rules are necessary to guarantee justice.
