Summary/Abstract: The principal objective of the article is to draw attention to the major intrinsic differences between two kinds of derivational processes, namely, regular and non-regular derivational processes, in Latvian. The range of issues discussed includes the dissimilar functions of the two types of processes in language, the distinct features of the derivational meaning of regular derivational models as opposed to non-regular models, the implications that the distinction between regular and non-regular derivational processes has for productivity measurements and for the traditional division of morphology into two isolated branches – inflectional and derivational morphology.
