Summary/Abstract: This article is a theoretical reflection on how epistemological and ontological considerations can enhance the structure and interpretative depth of morphemic and word formation analysis in Latvian. It offers a conceptual framework that clarifies the status of linguistic phenomena and their analytical relevance, promoting methodological consistency and meaningful interpretation. The author proposes a classification of four modes of existence of language phenomena – physical, cognitive, emergent, and analytically abstracted – and examines their role in modelling the language system. Diachrony is treated as a second-order epistemological construct, emerging from the comparison of synchronic language states over time. Three methodological paradigms are outlined: synchronic collective analysis, synchronic individual analysis, and diachronic reconstruction. The article also explores analytical perspectives for investigating word formation motivation across different ontological levels. Emphasis is placed on the need to clearly define analytical focus, data types, and interpretative boundaries to ensure coherent and empirically grounded inquiry.
