ONCE AGAIN ABOUT KOSTAQ CIPO’S PROFILE AS A LINGUIST AND GRAMMARIAN

Summary/Abstract: Kostaq Cipo represents one of the most outstanding Albanian linguists of his generation during the second half of the XXlh century that has built some of the foundations of Albanian linguistics fields. Describing Cipo’s profile as a linguist is not easy at all, because his linguistic studies includes different fields, general linguistics, lexicography, morphology, syntax, vvord formation, textologye. His opinion that a language is very complex, that the linguist should take in consideration the distinction betvveen the written and the spoken language, the distinction betvveen the individual and the social aspect of it, is a corner stone for the development of Albanian linguistics and grammar. He is one of the first Iinguists that opened the road of Albanian language styles as separate linguistic field. But one of the most important contribution are his books “Gramatika shqipe” (1949) dedicated to Albanian phonetics and morphology and “Sintaksa” (1952). These tvvo books represent the first effort ot writing a standard Albanian contemporary grammar of the academic level, where phonetics, morphology and syntax are described in details. fhe reader can find here very interesting and original descriptions of the Albanian phonetics, morphology and syntax. According to Cipo the grammar must be not only a guide for a better using of the language, but must describe also its mechanism or the way the language functions. One of the most interesting morphological issues is the way he defines the parts of the speech, starting first by the grammatical features, not by the semantic ones, which I think it makes sense as long as you are dealing with the morphological level of the words. Cipo is very peculiar and original in syntax too.
