Summary/Abstract: Homoeroticism and subject formation in the autobiographical writings of Ion Negoițescu, Mihai Rădulescu and Petre Sirin. This paper discusses three examples of autobiographical writings by Romanian gay men who came of age during World War II or shortly before and who all were to different degrees embedded in a cultural paradigm dominated by resilient conservatism in its views on gender and sexuality. In writing explicitly about their homoerotic feelings Ion Negoițescu, Mihai Rădulescu and Petre Sirin are progressive in the Romanian context. They break the unwritten law of silence even if they partly resort to pathologizing views on homosexuality like e.g. the theory of congenital inversion.
