Summary/Abstract: The present study is aimed to reveal those aspects of poverty, which depend on the social category or the degree of involvement in fighting against poverty. To reach our objectives, we used the theoretical and methodological ground of social representation theory: free word associations and identification of central elements using a tabular method (Vergès, 1992). The content analysis of the interviews followed the free word associations and has completed our methodology. The results showed that the social representation of poverty is based on the central relationship between unemployment and lack of money. Those who earn more money tend to make internal attributions concerning the causes of poverty, as compared with others. The people who are involved in fighting against poverty are disgusted and depressed, compared with those uninvolved, which are more optimistic.
