Summary/Abstract: In WW II, in an attempt to mobilize the masses, Stalin revived the old idea of Pan-Slavism. Bulgarian communists unconditionally approved and adopted the Kremlin’s new line. Just a few days after the coup of September 9, 1944 the Slav committee in Bulgaria was established. Very soon after its appearance it came up with the initiative for holding Slavic congress in Sofia, scheduled for the beginning of March, 1945. The hidden aim of that event was the breaking of the international isolation in which Bulgaria as a defeated country had fallen at that time. However, the benevolence of the Soviet leadership had to be won in the first place. Eventually, after the end of the congress, it appeared that the attitude of the responsible Soviet functionaries to Bulgaria and its new regime changed favorably.
