Summary/Abstract: This study is a theoretical analysis of the hypothesis that positive attitudes toward the deviants are determined by group cohesiveness. The arguments are based on the assumption that functional cohesiveness is different from emotional cohesiveness. The later is characteristic for tolerated deviance contexts. Emotional membership allows a conformity leading to negative consequences for the group. The study argues with social exchange theory and gives a support for an approach of social norms from an emotional point of view.
