The tendency towards a Marxist-Leninist ideology of the Albanian school (1966-1970)

Summary/Abstract: The period between 1966 and 1970 marks the time when the “New Reform” to “revolutionize the school” was initiated, a reform which left a lot of consequences in the future developments of the Albanian educational system. The main principles of this reform where introduced in the “well known” Enver Hoxha’s speech of 7th March 1968. His “theories” served as the basis for the changes that were undertaken in all the education’s levels and categories in relation to the ideological and scientific aspects. First of all the class struggle would be strengthened by increasing the number of subjects of political character. The new curricula and lesson plans would be overwhelmed with different elements of the political education. This process was intensified especially in 1969 when the reform “to revolutionize the school” entered a new more advanced phase. The social subjects taught at school would be the focus of the changes in the curricula. Starting from 1966-1967 the subjects of language, literature, history, etc. were “enriched” with “contemporary” topics. The subject of literature in particular, considering the importance it had to “revolutionize the schools’ youth”, was given a new dimension. The changing process would involve the textbooks as well. This was a firm demand by the party-state. The idea was to review all the textbooks of all subjects removing everything that according to the party, was strange to the materialist-dialectic concepts. From 1969-70 these theoretical changes were gradually implemented in the teaching practice, thus irrevocably and further indoctrinating the new generations until the eventual fall of the communist system in the 1990’s.
