Summary/Abstract: The article deals with creations of the Lithuanian theatre director Jonas Vaitkus and stresses the polyphonic model which is significant in his performances “Lamb of God” by Feliksas Bajoras, “Madame de Sade” by Yukio Mishima, “The Dream Play” by August Strindberg and “The Village of Stepanchikovo” and “Demons” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In the polyphonic model of his directorial approach, Jonas Vaitkus usually amalgamates some scenes of the performance, starting it with the theme presented in the beginning of the performance in an unexpected way with the help of a minor character. Vaitkus is interested in the evolution of the phenomenon of the theatre and its progress, that’s why his first productions, marked with the romantic tendency, in the last decade were transformed into polyphonic ones; this characterizes the theatrical direction of Jonas Vaitkus as post-modern. With the help of per-formances based on this model, Vaitkus aims to define and decipher the dramaturgical material and create a new definition of the theatre. Polyphonic performances of Jonas Vaitkus reflect his striving for a new artistic quality through the unified and precise compositional structure. These performances are rich in forms, they provoke spectators, but it would be difficult to match them to the strict typological definitions because most often the director tries to combine different directorial models in one performance.
