Summary/Abstract: The University of Physical Education and Sport (UPES) is an important institution in the higher education system from Romania. This paper is a historical research that attempts to examine the evolution of this university during the communist regime. The first part of the paper explains how the Romanian communist system of education understood to use UPES to train specialists. This is followed by an analysis of the admission process in UPES, its student life, foreign students and professors. We use the qualitative and the quantitative methods in order to analyze the role of this institution in the Romanian society. Also, this article shows the place of UPES in the national program for development of sport performance. UPES occupied a central role in the strategy of sport for masses, but also in the country’s need to train champions.
