Summary/Abstract: This paper is meant to provide a new approach of Plato’s Socrates question ‘What is F?’ (WF). Because the textual analysis is the method I chose, I have taken as the main scope of my research Plato’s dialogue Protagoras, 310a‐311a. Against many Platonic scholars, that have viewed the WF question as expressing Socrates’ desire to reach out a definitional statement about F, I attempt to show that he presses upon his interlocutors to bring out an explanatory account of F, in which the definition of F is only a part of it. By explanation, I mean the account that requires to the inquirer to comprehend a controversial subject matter in a unitary or coherent way. Therefore, my paper is concerned to collect the devices Plato used for a coherent discourse about F. These devices I suppose to be found in the logical structure of Socratic interrogative game.
