Summary/Abstract: The Principle or Law of Non-Contradiction (PNC) functioned as a dogma in almost all of the history of Western philosophy and logic. An opponent of PNC, J. Lukasiewicz objects to Aristotle’s account of the principle the confused threefold meaning: as an ontological, logical, and psychological principle. This paper will take into account the threefold meaning and attempt to establish that Aristotle’s purpose is that of founding a principle of analyzing metaphysically relevant things in a scientific way. In the core of this interpretation stand the consideration of Aristotelian PNC as actually a principle of unity of things. This point is demonstrated by a textual analysis of Aristotle’s formulation of PNC in Met. IV, along with a reconstruction of the philosophical positions alluded to in the same book. The analysis of PNC formula drives us to the conclusion that it is in fact closer to the modern formal implication, than to our law of non-contradiction. By demonstrating this, we extend the textual analysis to the second argument for PNC from the same book of Metaphysics.
