Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the history and the structure of L-systems are described together with their interesting properties. L-systems were introduced and developed in 1968 by the Hungarian theoretical biologist and botanist Aristid Lindenmayer and are used to model the processes of plant growth and other natural or abstract phenomena, like fractals. The discovery of L-systems has raised a lot of intriguing philosophical issues such as the relationship between simplicity and complexity, and the problem of compatibility of computer simulations and real phenomena. Both issues are discussed in the text.
