Summary/Abstract: The identitary problem is, of course, the one that offers esthetic and ethical individuality to Norman Manea's works, as well as the theme of subversion, which is modulated in the characterial features of some symbolic heroes (the clown, "the stupid", the marginalized, etc.). Three major topoi are configuring an epical universe of undisputable esthetic and ethical coherence: the experience of the Holocaust, the sufferings endured during the communist dictatorship and, at the same time, the avatars of exile. The traumatic history of the self is incorporated in the all-comprising history of a demonized and absurd century.
