Summary/Abstract: The essay rises the problem of complex relation between distance and engagement of a teacher in the process of philosophy teaching. Ways of dealing with this problem are searched in the way of investigation of the notion of irony, as it is understood in the philosophy of Socratic tradition. Six different approaches the notion of irony are successively presented and discussed, starting with its most popular understanding and finishing with one that is widest and far from poplar intuitions. Finally all these understandings are related to the challenge of teaching philosophy.
