Summary/Abstract: In view of the economic importance of SMEs for the EU, the growing use of fundsto increase their competitiveness by 2020, and the practical support in the use of fundsfor more than 15 years, the authors realize that more than ever for the success of theuse and management of funds for the SMEs mediators will be required to specializein particular services for this market. The problem analyzed states that only few SMEstake advantage of possible fundings and that a professional management is often lacking. It is argued that exploiting this untapped potential requires a new understanding indealing with the funding, i.e. as part of financing mix of investment and innovation. Thefinancial intermediation is seen as a successful, active, integrated and strategic approachto the subsidies and as a logical from financing for SMEs. The strategic and operationalmanagement challenges will be described briefly. With notes on literature, the critical success factors are discussed and it isdetermined that there is no general definition of success factors for the mediation ofgrants. These are rather situational, over time changing dynamic, regional / nationaldifferences in market dominated and depending on the individual and intersubjectivepositioning of the companies offering these services.
