Hermeneutic circle – relation between interpreter and text

Summary/Abstract: The concept of hermeneutic circle was found for the first time in Phaidros, Plato’s well-known dialogue and it was considered a method of construction of a speech. Later, the term „hermeneutics” was rethought by Schleiermacher and gave the reader two possibilities of interpretation. The gramatical side of interpretation offers the reader a first impression when the text is introduced to him. This method is considered “objective” when it is compared to the psychological side of interpretation, which is more subjective and individual oriented. Further, Gadamer brings a new perspective to the concept of interpretation by giving the reader an important role: to understand the meaning of the word itself and not just to interpret the word from his personal experience.
