Summary/Abstract: During the First World War Serbia’s sufferings found a broad response among the English people. British women took an active part in the volunteer movement. They orga¬nized hospitals in Serbia, they worked as doctors and nurses to fight against epidemics. Some of them fell victim. Flora Sandes, at first also working as a nurse, decided to join Ser-bian forces and rose to become an officer. To this day Serbs esteem the exploits of these British women, which had become a part of their collective memory
