Summary/Abstract: The study examines the influence of the secularization of ecclesiastical properties (1556) on the development of the market-town Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia). Before the secularization Gyulafehérvár was the episcopal residence of the Bishop of Transylvania, and the market-town’s landlords were partly the Bishops and on the other hand the Chapter of Transylvania. After 1556 Gyulafehérvár was owned by the treasury of the king and later of the princes, and the market-town became the princely residence. The study offers a detailed description of the market-town’s development until 1571, it focuses on the changes which took place in the life of the town, such as the settlement of the refugees from Lippa (Lipova), the urban government, the process of secularization in the case of belongings of the Transylvanian Chapter.
