Summary/Abstract: In this essay, first presented at the second international congress of Czech language and literature fourteen years ago, the author is concerned with two works of fine art which relate directly to Bohumil Hrabal (1914–1997). It is focused on Hrabal’s creativity as a visual artist – particularly his collage graphics, six of which are connected to his stories, and two collages, inspired by the Surrealist collages of Jindřich Štyrský (1899–1942), which are a reaction to the horrors of war. In method, the essay is based on some of Hrabal’s writing from Domácí úkoly (Úvahy a rozhovory) (Homework: Essays and conversations) and two essays from Jakub Češka’s Průzračnost tvorby v zrcadle literatury (The transparency of art in the light of literature, 2014).
