Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the constitutive elements of the virtue of patience taken down in Augustine’s treatise De patientia. In the Middle Ages they were received, developed and systematized by Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologiae. Emphasizing the essential attitude of patience towards grief, to endure grief in the perspective of higher good, also determines its actual object in a contemporary situation. The current reflexion of patience drawing from the traditional theory accentuates mainly its importance to medicine.
